Life Offers Clues • I Am Grateful
Looking back, I can see how many experiences in my life pointed toward the creation of GATE. Life reveals clues, and at a certain point I realized that everything along my path had led me to its formation.
Although the connections weren’t obvious at the time, in hindsight I can now see the unifying threads woven through my journey.
I believe each of us has a singular life purpose—sometimes accompanied by smaller purposes along the way. By reflecting on the events of our lives, we begin to understand how our purpose unfolds, guided by universal intelligence.
The specifics differ for everyone, but in every life, clues appear. For me, all roads led to transformational entertainment.
I’d like to share some of the clues from what I know has been a blessed life, in the hope that they inspire you to join me in this quest for global unity around the deep, innate connection between consciousness and art.

Billy Preston - The Fifth Beatle
In the early eighties, I had the honor of serving as personal manager for Billy Preston. For years, after his death, I couldn’t find a video tribute to The Beatles that Billy created. I presumed it was lost forever and probably destroyed. Recently, while cleaning out a box, I discovered a VHS video copy of the tribute! I’m having it transferred to a DVD.
Billy was responsible for me acquiring my first Apple Mac 128K computer in 1984, but that’s another story.
As you might know, Billy, in addition to being a successful solo artist, played and performed with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Peter Frampton and many other iconic artists.

With The Beatles, Billy played on “Get Back,” “Don’t Let Me Down,”
“I Want You (She’s So Heavy,” “Something” and other songs. He was called “The Fifth Beatle.” He played with George Harrison on “My Sweet Lord.”
Billy was challenging to work with at times, but his stories and insights about music and stardom as he experienced it were inspiring.
I will always remember him for his seminal artistry and mastery of the Hammond B3 organ.

1984-1985 A Taste of Utopia, Ayurveda and Gandarva Veda

1984 - Maharishi Ayurveda Prevention Center
I attended one of the first Ayurveda courses in the West in the city of Den Haag, Netherlands for one month in 1984.
During this course, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi re-introduced Ayurveda to the West with an elaborate syllabus and practicum that unfolded the potential of Ayurveda as a primary and powerful healing modality.
Following this course, Maharishi set-up Maharishi Ayurveda Medical Centers around the world and the US that raised the visibility of, and established, Ayurveda in the West.
Returning to Los Angeles after this course, I was offered the position of Administrative Director at one of the first Ayurvedic clinics in the US: Maharishi Ayurveda Medical Center in Pacific Palisades.
I knew Ayurveda would become a powerful force in the US and indeed it has. The tenets of Ayurveda remain a positive health understanding for me and its practices are a part of my personal health regimen.
This experience led me to create a workshop titled, “Daily Routines for Creatives” now offered through GATE.

1990 MindWalk: The Awakening of “Transformational Film”
In 1990, while marketing the pioneering film, “MindWalk,” John created the phrases “Transformation Entertainment” and “Transformational Film.”
“‘MindWalk’ was the first film I promoted. From one perspective, it was the first “transformational” film, formally launching this genre.”
“I remember sitting in an advance screening in San Francisco, experiencing the audience’s excited reactions and thinking, ‘they are having a transformative experience.”
“During the Q & A, following the screening, it became apparent there was great resonance and enthusiasm with the themes and ideas presented in the MindWalk story and it was clear there was a need and demand for this emerging category.”
“After this event, I began describing MindWalk and audience experiences as transformational and used the phrases “Transformational Film” and “Transformational Entertainment” to frame MindWalk to audiences and the media. The description stuck and we subsequently built GATE on this seminal idea.”

I worked with Fritjof on the film, MindWalk, and also promoted several of his books including EcoManagement (for which I secured a publishing deal), The Tao of Physics, The Turning Point and The Web Of Life. I was a consultant for Fritjof’s eco-think-do tank, The Elmwood Institute, and served as a booking agent for speaking engagements.
