Looking back, I can see how many experiences in my life led to the creation of GATE.
Life reveals clues… and at a certain point along the way, I realized that everything on my path had led me to the eventual formation of GATE.
Although not obvious at the time, looking back, I can see the unifying threads and connections in all of my past experiences…
I believe we all have a singular life purpose, (and perhaps also a few smaller life purposes).
We can reference the events of our lives to understand the unfolding of our purpose, orchestrated by universal intelligence.
While the specifics vary from person to person, for all of us, life leaves clues…
For me, all roads led to transformational entertainment.
I’d like to share with you some of the clues from what I know has been a blessed life, in the hope that it will inspire you to join me on this quest for global unity around the innate connection between consciousness and art.
Before teaching myself to play guitar, I formed my first band with a couple 5th grade school chums, Tom Sumner and Mark Barringer. The band was called "The Young Uns'" and I played... the tambourine! Our first gig was at the Flint Swim & Racquet Club. This was my first public performance. Around this same time, I started seriously learning guitar, motivated, as many musicians are, by the pains of adolescent alienation and rejection. When I strapped my guitar on, I remember feeling a greater sense of self, of confidence and personal power and possibilities.
In 1968, after a few years of intensely focused self-study and practice, alone, in my bedroom, I emerged and started jamming with local musicians and groups.
I co-formed my first real band in early 1969 with bass player Bruce Crawley and drummer Lyle Day. Later that year, I met guitarist, singer/ songwriter, Rick Farner, and we formed a band with Bruce. This was a major turning point.
In these vintage photos, you see us rehearsing for an upcoming gig. Our "rehearsal studio" was the former bedroom of Mark Farner, who had left home by this time, to become one of the world's biggest rock stars in the band Grand Funk Railroad. But that’s a well-known story — they sold our Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles! Grand Funk, and Mark in particular, influenced us and that influence showed up in our music and our youthful swagger.
The guitar I'm playing, in the photo with the Fabulous Pack poster behind me, is a 1968 Gibson SG Standard. When my parents saw how serious I was about playing the guitar, after a few years of forced piano lessons, they bought it for me from Marshall Music in Flint. I had been playing a cheap Sears Silvertone guitar before the SG. I wish I still had both of those guitars!
My everyday, and stage, fashion sense was more developed in those days. And yes, I was much thinner! It was stylish in the forms of London's Carnaby Street, Michigan's psychedelic clothes emporium, Chess King and the local head shop / boutique, Touch.
Raven Red played in schools, armories, ballrooms, malls, parks and auditoriums. We played in battles of the bands, which were popular in those days, and we opened for nationally touring artists such as Alice Cooper, Edgar Winter, the legendary MC5, Iggy and the Psychedelic Stooges (The Stooges) and many seminal Michigan bands. I especially loved gigs that featured Fillmore inspired psychedelic liquid light shows popular in those days. Being on stage in front of hundreds and thousands of people, is an unforgettable experience. Michael Moore would occasionally take the stage before we played to promote his underground newspaper, the Flint Freedom Reader, co-founded by Mark Farner, and whatever political / social cause he was on to, like the Flint Free Clinic.
Those times were filled with youthful adventure, experimentation in many forms, and for me personally, the deepening of my inner journey. Richard Strickland, owner of Middle Earth Books, a metaphysical bookstore located in Touch Boutique, my favorite head shop and where I worked part-time at Off-The-Wall Records, was instrumental in introducing me to the finest spiritual literature of the day that would be foundational in my life.
Rick, Bruce and I would remain band mates and friends for years to come. We shared many remarkable experiences. Rick and I are still friends and in contact to this day. Bruce died in 2010. RIP.
Rush, a future musical incarnation of Raven Red was another fan favorite and more musically evolved and I stayed with Rush until I stopped performing to pursue other interests, including becoming a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. Rush’s great drummer, Rocco Peraino and I remain friends today.
There’s so much more to share about this period in my life, but ...
I gave my first “concert" for some neighborhood girls in 1963, in the basement of my parents’ home in Flint, MI., lip-syncing and playing “air guitar" to "My Bonnie” by Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers (aka The Beatles).

Our band name was inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe poem, "The Raven."

1967-1968 “Are you Experienced?”
At age 11, I had my first two “spiritual experiences.” In the first one, I was sitting in my bedroom, practicing my guitar, when I began to feel a spatial shift…
All of a sudden, I was THERE, in the present moment.
My process of seeing, had “become one” with the fret board, and with my fingers playing… and as the spatial shift became more complete, my body also came into synthesis.
As my attention collapsed to the central point of clarity, the background faded. This experience lasted for awhile, and expanded through the walls, and so forth…
The second experience happened while I was sitting in my parents’ living room, reading the newspaper…
I began to hear this cosmic hum… and it took my attention away from what I was doing, from my body, and from my perception of my father sitting in the room with me. It was like the sonic counterpart of the first perceptual experience, and this time, as I became more still, I felt as though I was led into a spontaneous meditation on sound.
These expressions of consciousness awoke in me, at an early age, the desire to understand life in a deeper sense.
John’s musical past... early days in music.
My love of music became evident as early as 1962 as I ravenously consumed my parents and sisters’ LP collections and listened for hours to my father playing violin in the wee hours of the morning.
Though he was an engineer/designer by trade, his true love was music. Familial responsibilities prevented him from pursuing a professional music career. I inherited his desire.
We were precocious -- in every way imaginable! I was 13 years old. Bruce was 13. Rick was 14. Early on, our fans proclaimed that we were musical prodigies. I don't know if that was true, but we had many loyal fans and wherever we performed, people loved our music and showered us with appreciation -- in its various forms!
Our preferred musical genre was then characterized as Psychedelic, Hard Rock / Blues. We performed a mixture of original compositions and cover songs. Many of the cover songs we performed showcased my lead guitar skills, which according to many, were formidable and uncannily reminiscent of the styles of Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Mike Bloomfield, Alvin Lee, and other notable guitarists of the epoch. Audiences seemed to marvel at the combination of our youth, musical skills and high energy, high decibel music.
One of our roadies, Derek Bartlett, was also our booking agent and the minder / guardian of our "head supplies" and backstage passes!

Billy Preston - The Fifth Beatle
In the early eighties, I had the honor of serving as personal manager for Billy Preston. For years, after his death, I couldn’t find a video tribute to The Beatles that Billy created. I presumed it was lost forever and probably destroyed. Recently, while cleaning out a box, I discovered a VHS video copy of the tribute! I’m having it transferred to a DVD.
Billy was responsible for me acquiring my first Apple Mac 128K computer in 1984, but that’s another story.
As you might know, Billy, in addition to being a successful solo artist, played and performed with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Peter Frampton and many other iconic artists.

With The Beatles, Billy played on “Get Back,” “Don’t Let Me Down,”
“I Want You (She’s So Heavy,” “Something” and other songs. He was called “The Fifth Beatle.” He played with George Harrison on “My Sweet Lord.”
Billy was challenging to work with at times, but his stories and insights about music and stardom as he experienced it were inspiring.
I will always remember him for his seminal artistry and mastery of the Hammond B3 organ.

I attended one of the first Ayurveda courses in the West in the city of Den Haag, Netherlands for one month in 1984.
During this course, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi re-introduced Ayurveda to the West with an elaborate syllabus and practicum that unfolded the potential of Ayurveda as a primary and powerful healing modality.
Following this course, Maharishi set-up Maharishi Ayurveda Medical Centers around the world and the US that raised the visibility of, and established, Ayurveda in the West.
Returning to Los Angeles after this course, I was offered the position of Administrative Director at one of the first Ayurvedic clinics in the US: Maharishi Ayurveda Medical Center in Pacific Palisades.
I knew Ayurveda would become a powerful force in the US and indeed it has. The tenets of Ayurveda remain a positive health understanding for me and its practices are a part of my personal health regimen.
This experience led me to create a workshop titled, “Daily Routines for Creatives” now offered through GATE.

1990 MindWalk: The Awakening of “Transformational Film”
In 1990, while marketing the pioneering film, “MindWalk,” John created the phrases “Transformation Entertainment” and “Transformational Film.”
“‘MindWalk’ was the first film I promoted. From one perspective, it was the first “transformational” film, formally launching this genre.”
“I remember sitting in an advance screening in San Francisco, experiencing the audience’s excited reactions and thinking, ‘they are having a transformative experience.”
“During the Q & A, following the screening, it became apparent there was great resonance and enthusiasm with the themes and ideas presented in the MindWalk story and it was clear there was a need and demand for this emerging category.”
“After this event, I began describing MindWalk and audience experiences as transformational and used the phrases “Transformational Film” and “Transformational Entertainment” to frame MindWalk to audiences and the media. The description stuck and we subsequently built GATE on this seminal idea.”

I worked with Fritjof on the film, MindWalk, and also promoted several of his books including EcoManagement (for which I secured a publishing deal), The Tao of Physics, The Turning Point and The Web Of Life.
