A GIFT TO ECKHART
Eckhart on Challenges and our Story
Some people find that when problems come, they suddenly wake up and go, “Oh!” They become more alert and more present.
When all is going well, alertness decreases and they go, “Okay, let’s have another drink. Where are we going on vacation next? Oh, let’s go to Bali. Oh, great!” And then they’re in Bali on the beach, or they’re getting a body treatment in a spa. And they might think, “Well, I’ve got exactly what I need for my full awakening because the outer conditions are now perfect.”
Yet, you may be surprised that it is quite possible that if you were wrongly imprisoned and put in a dreadful prison cell, the chances of you becoming present would probably be greater.
It’s the challenges that we need. Now, please don’t ask the universe to wrongly imprison you. The universe will give you what you need. However, to have what the mind calls the “most suitable condition for my spiritual growth,” is not necessarily the most suitable condition for your spiritual growth. “I need security. I don’t want to have to worry about money. I need people to give me enough space. My body needs to be looked after. I need to have the stimulus of travel.”
That sounds wonderful, but that’s not how it works. You’re more likely to find it when things go wrong in your life. Those can be awakeners.
There are some teachings that tell you your life is complete when you’re so good at manifesting that you always can manifest what you want. However, what you want may be a reflection of a certain egoic pattern in your mind and it may not be what is best for you. In many cases, what a person wants is not what they really need.
There was a time when I was completely lost, not knowing what to do. I thought, “I must get a job. Okay, what can I do?” That was already after my shift, but the shift was just inner. So, my outer life was a bit lost for a while. The job search never quite worked out for me.
Well, I wasn’t worried—but there was a continuous shortage. There is an example I gave in Stillness Speaks of somebody sitting on a bench, putting his hand in his pocket, and pulling out a pound or two, saying, “Oh, that’s all the money I have left.” That happened to me. On several occasions, I put my hand in my pocket and there was only a very limited amount of money left.
I wrote about that very briefly in Stillness Speaks as an example of what the situation would be like if I became invested in a story about myself, saying, “I’m ruined! I’ve thrown away all the great opportunities that life has given me and here I am stranded on a park bench. This is what my life has come to. I’ll have to go begging for money now. I have to do the most menial job just for money.” The story would go on and on in the mind. But I didn’t have that mind anymore, fortunately. If I had had it, the story would have made me very unhappy.
I gave that as an example because putting your money in your pocket without a story, you simply say, “Well, that’s the money left in my pocket. Is there anything I can do about it? Hm. Well, I can try to talk to that person or that person I know. Or I might see if someone will put me up for a few days. Or I can go to an employment agency and see if they have a temporary job.”
Without the story, there’s no suffering. With the story, there’s suffering.
And so, I stopped trying to fit in, and then people came to ask me questions occasionally. The teaching gradually started. Time came in. It took years to evolve—the ability to speak, the ability to help people using words and to find the right terminology to point to things. It just happened gradually.
Again, there’s the interplay of time and the Now. The horizontal dimension took time for the teaching to grow, for the new state of consciousness to become fully incorporated. And yet, there was always present moment awareness as the foundation.
So, when you’re aligned without the unhappiness of the story, you’re more likely to invite helpful factors into your life because—through that inner alignment—you are much more connected to the totality. You’re not cut off. When you’re connected to the totality, it can help you much more through synchronistic events. So, that’s the beauty of it.

SOMEWHERE IN THOSE DEPTHS ~
The causes of much of what happens in our lives lie far deeper than we imagine.
Yet we seldom look far enough beneath the surface.

Inaugural Invitation
Attendance at the GATE Inaugural event (a private affair), was by invitation-only.
GATE was a fairly radical proposition at the time. So, to pack the house, I spent several weeks going through my contacts, making lists, doing research, having conversations - personally reaching out to potential attendees, organizations and companies, via email and phone, and explaining what GATE was and shared our vision / mission.
We endeavored to attract attendees who met the following criteria to ensure alignment and understanding and a beneficial experience and impact for all who attended.
All attendees had in common:
-Full time working professionals in the entertainment, arts and media fields.
-People of influence, decision-makers.
-Personally committed to consciousness and transformation, or at least have a strong interest.
We not only achieved our aim and had a standing-room only audience, we turned away 1600 people.

Transformational Entertainment -
What Is It, and Why Are We Here?
Remarks by Will Arntz, Creator, What The Bleep Do We Know?!
Historically there are 2 modes of entertainment. The first is the “Bread and Circus” mode - pioneered by the Roman Emperors - in which the populace was fed entertainment on a more basic level, with the goal of rendering them complacent, so the rulers could do whatever they wanted.
The other mode was championed by the Traditional celtic culture, where the Bards were entrusted with a sacred duty to communicate the wisdom of the Druids and the true history of the their people. The Bards were so revered, that they were considered on the same level as the priests and priestesses.
Both cultures realized the power of entertainment. It was the intent that was different. And guess what - we’re living in a roman culture, not a celtic one.
And I think the reason most of us are here - is we grow tired of the Bread and circus mode. And to quote one of the greats of transformational entertainment - “We’re mad as hell and not going to take it anymore”.
But the questions remain: why now? And, is anyone really interested?
When we finished What the BLEEP we were told by everyone that there was absolutely no audience for it and our dream of 100 million viewers was the product of too much incense and 1 too many meditation sessions. Yet 5 years later we’ve reached our goals. The audience for the sort of media we’ve been talking about tonight is out there, waiting...
And why now? We’ve come to the end of flat earth. That view is you can go on forever, polluting, conquering, exploiting because there's always more to get in the west. But the entire world is now confronted with the overwhelming fact of how we’re all connected. We’re breathing air expelled from chinese factories. On just a physical level we must fundamentally change, transform, if humanity is going to move forward.
And through some strange twisting of fate - WE have the megaphone.
Inaugural Welcome
Remarks by John Raatz, GATE Founder
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Please show your appreciation to Michael Fitzpatrick and his “Invocation for World Peace.” Thank you, Michael.
Good evening. I’m John Raatz, founder of GATE and of The Visioneering Group, here in Los Angeles.
At TVG, we’ve been providing marketing services to the transformational community for more than 20 years. And a little less than 10 years ago, I had this idea to form an organization that would support communicators of transformation. Nearly 10 years later, here we all are. And I think this gathering is extraordinary! Give yourselves a hand!
Took almost as long to get this up as it takes to get a movie or series made!
But of course, everything is timing. And the timing for GATE is clearly now. Never before has humanity been so ripe for the message and experience of transformation. Humanity has truly been brought together in consciousness with the blossoming understanding that the world as we know it is a result of our actions and inactions.
And that if we are to survive and thrive, a new vision is absolutely necessary. Followed by focused effort to make it physically real. I think a case can be made that this is already happening!
Inherent in this is a new understanding of who and what we are as human beings. There are now millions of people around the world who are at home in this conversation. And many thousands of us in the media, who are shaping the messages that reinforce our understanding … and who, through their work, are opening the mental, emotional, and spiritual doors to a new awareness for millions of others.
And that’s why we’re here tonight: to celebrate our alignment, to hear from some of those among us who are doing remarkable work …. to be nourished and inspired by the vision and wisdom of one of the world’s leading teachers and bestselling authors, Eckhart Tolle.
And to consider how we might use this organization to support ourselves … and our growing numbers … in this chosen mission. So welcome once again to this amazing evening. Enjoy our program, and I’ll be back later in the evening with some closing remarks.
Our purpose here, tonight, is to explore the role and capacity of entertainment, arts and media to aid in the process of humanity’s awakening.

The Dalai Lama Congratulates GATE
JOHN RAATZ JIM CARREY HH DALAI LAMA
John Raatz:
"While His Holiness, The Dalai Lama could not be with us in-person this evening, he sends his warmest regards and offers this message to us":
THE DALAI LAMA
“The cultivation of compassion is not a luxury but a necessity if we are to survive as a species. Globalization has strengthened the realization that what happens in even a very distant part of the world can have a profound impact on another. We are indeed one. In this awareness, the media and entertainment community are part of this globalization and in many parts of the world it is looked to to define who one is or wishes to be.
With such power comes responsibility.
This GATE event this evening acknowledges not only our common humanity and connectedness but also the power that is wielded by each one of you. As such, a commitment and focus of your immense talents and creative abilities toward having a positive impact by promoting kindness, love and compassion has the ability to be transformative.”
I first announced the formation, and launching, of GATE during an interview with published / editor Nancy Roof of Kosmos Journal, one of my favorite magazines.
In addition to examining and changing our personal inner lives and our cultural values, the conscious activist is challenged to apply this wisdom to strategies that affect the manifest world. We balance action and reflection, working with a fierce heart at all scales from the personal, to local, to national, to global and even kosmic levels.
